Dragon Name Generator

This dragon name generator pairs hard, rolling names such as Vyrmathrax or Korgoth with titles like the Ember Tyrant, so the list works for both a quick encounter and a long-running villain.

What makes a dragon name sound powerful
Dragon names are usually short, heavy and built from hard consonants such as k, g, x, th and r. Three syllables give a name enough weight without turning it into a tongue twister. Names that end in a hard sound, such as -ax, -oth or -ur, feel final, while names that end in a vowel feel older and more regal. That is why gold and other benevolent dragons in our list lean on softer endings.
The title does the storytelling. A name tells players that the creature is large and frightening; the title tells them what it does: Scourge of Ashes, Warden of the White Peaks, the Hoard-Keeper. Use the title as a plot hook, because it hints at where the dragon lives and what it wants.
Matching names to dragon types
Match the element to the sound and the epithet. Fire dragons suit crackling, burning words such as cinder, ember and forge. Ice dragons suit slower, colder words such as rime, glacier and silent. Storm dragons use sky and thunder imagery, shadow dragons use eclipse and gloom, forest dragons use moss, root and thorn, and gold dragons use light and oaths.
If your dragon is not a monster but an NPC, such as a patron or a hermit, drop the epithet and use the bare name, or give it a casual nickname that locals use. A dragon that goes by Old Ignmir at the village market feels very different from Ignmir the Last of the Elder Brood.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use these dragon names in my campaign or book?
Yes. Use them in games, stories and other projects. Generated names can coincide with existing names, so check before you register one as a trademark or username.
How do I name a dragon in D&D?
Choose the dragon's type, then pick a short, heavy name and a title that hints at its habits. Many tables give dragons a title so players learn something about the creature from its name alone.
What do the titles mean?
They are descriptive epithets, the kind that legends attach to powerful beings. Each type has its own set, so fire titles speak of ash and forges while ice titles speak of glaciers and winter.
Can I get a name without a title?
Yes. Some results are bare names. You can also delete the title from any name you like.
How do I share a list with my game master?
Press Share to copy a link that reproduces the exact list, or use Copy all to paste every name into your notes.
